Orthopraxx: Back to the future.

My retrospection.
Orthopraxx for me – born in Fürstenfeldbruck, a small town outside of Munich – means returning back to my roots. I am looking back on my time as an attending physician at the county hospital St. Elisabeth, Dillingen, North Bavaria. For nearly 20 years my professional engagement focused on the leadership and development of the orthopaedic division at the county hospital St. Elisabeth,Dillingen: this meant 20 sickbeds and approx. 700 surgeries per year.

Within my spectrum of the orthopaedic surgeries, besides the surgery of shoulders the endoprosthetic supply of the hip joint and the knee joint emerged increasingly as the main focus. Especially the development of the minimally invasive, increasingly gentle surgery procedure at the hip joint fascinated me even more, particularly as the results constantly improved.

AMIS: Fascination of the 1st. hour
The surgical activity for me is the fusion of science, manual arts and medical responsibility. Looking for the most gentle technique of surgery in the beginning of 2007 - during a study work in Paris at Dr. Laude – I finally ran across the AMIS-technique, where no tendon or muscle has to be cut in order to implant the artificial joint at the hip. Already after the first few gentle medical applications of this method on operated patients, I was completely convinced of this surgical technique.

I share a deep feeling of happiness, with my patients when they are already set up the first time, just two days after the operation without pain in the recently operated leg and thereby can cope with the first steps without crutches. AMIS stands for Anterior Minimal-Invasive Surgery and means: a minimal-invasive surgical technique to access (the hip) from the beginning. The anatomy of the hip muscles in this region is an invitation to us to choose this particular access route.

AMIS: attraction.
As an instructor in the reference centre in Dillingen, AMIS led me to my lectures, inter alia, Tours and Nice in France. But the interesting thing was, that Dillingen itself became one of the germ cells of this surgical technique. Even there, the AMIS Technology will continue with competence and passionate application under the direction of my long-time colleague and collaborator Dr. Jürgen Beck.

To see how the interest in this surgical technique increases more and more – even on an international level - to record how doctors from all over Germany arrive, to explore the little-known AMIS technology, fills me with deep joy. I am absolutely convinced that the AMIS technology - particularly in the younger generation of surgeons- will spread further and further.

"Today is yesterday's tomorrow"

Orthopraxx, the combined view into the future.

A good, purposeful partnership: In finding Dr. Alfred Eichbichler, I treasure very much a colleague who studied the endoscopic surgical technique in its basic settings and who also is looking for the most gentle way, to preserve the function of the joint. These are ideal conditions for a dialogue between gentle conservation of the joint and minimal-invasive joint replacement.

Yours sincerely,
Dr. Martin Nolde
